Wadebridge RFC U13 14 Tavistock RFC U13 24 A PHYSICALLY stronger Wadebridge team were outplayed by a disciplined and cohesive Tavistock squad captained by Frazer Bayliss. Despite Wadebridge's strong possession from set scrums and lineouts, Tavistock achieved high levels of turnover and ball retention. The Tavistock pack has made impressive strides during the season and demonstrated its dominance as a group exploiting Wadebridge's indiscipline. Considerable effort by the likes of Martin Budden, Jack Crozier, Sam Pluckrose and Jack Cooper enabled the ball to be not only driven forward by the pack but cycled to the backs. There was clear evidence of the pack 'protecting' scrum half Frazer Bayliss so he could make clean distribution into the running backs from a defensive platform. The first try came from Dominic Dewson at no 8 from a pick and blindside drive from a scrum in the Wadebridge 10 metre. Wadebridge's indiscipline resulted in a penalty kick awarded to Tavistock being put away by Chris Swash. Further indiscretion resulted in a penalty try and conversion being awarded to Tavistock, although Jez Massy Birch had virtually reached the line. At the start of the second half Wadebridge had yet to score but with the advantage of the gradient enjoyed by Tavistock before the break ran in a deserved converted try from a strong run and a well exploited overlap. The next score went to Tavistock through a breakaway run from halfway by Ryan Nichol placing the ball under the posts for a Henry Kisby conversion. Tiredness began to show in the final quarter which enabled Wadebridge to run in their second converted try from an unchallenged break at the halfway. It was a game where the Tavistock lads showed superb defence of their line and maintained high ball possession through quick thinking at the turnover coupled with cool decision making on accurate distribution. This was an enjoyable game between two matched teams with different strengths.
