A DARTMOOR photographer this week captured the moment a Redwing Thrush tucked into a winter feast in the centre of Okehampton.
The Redwing, and other birds, have been feeding on red berries growing on a tree outside the Merlin Cinema in Red Lion Yard.
The tree, which is covered in red berries, is a perfect feeding point for the birds, which have made their way from Scandinavia to the UK to feed in the cold weather.
Nature photographer Tom Wallis from South Zeal spotted the birds feeding on his way through the yard last Thursday.
Mr Wallis, who is also a member of Okehampton Camera Club, said: 'It's a wonderful sight to see them feeding on such a beautiful tree.
'People walking past will be able to stop and watch the birds as they don't seem to be bothered at all by passers by.
'They love the berries and I think for the amount of berries on the tree, they will be there for another week or more, so there will be plenty of opportunity for people to take in their beauty.
'They work their way around the country from tree to tree and it is often in this cold weather that you will see them feeding.'
The birds were a welcome sight for Mr Wallis, who won first prize for his photograph of tumbling buzzards at the Dartmoor Bird Watching Preservation Association awards, which was presented by Anne Widdecombe last December at Bovey Tracey.
Shop assistant at Endacott's Bakery Shirley Drew said: 'We have seen a lot of people taking photos throughout the day of the birds.
'It's a really lovely sight with all the snow fallen on the berries and the birds perched in the tree.
'Some of the berries have fallen due to the cold weather, but people are stopping all the time to watch them feed.'
