TAVISTOCK Town Council has pledged £12,000 to support next year's stannary celebrations in the town.

The celebrations to mark 700 years since Tavistock was named as a stannary town will run alongside the 900th anniversary extravaganza for the signing of the market charter.

A total of £2,000 and £3,000 in facility support was agreed by the town council for this year with £10,000 earmarked for the next financial year.

Cllr Iain Andrews, who is chairman of the group organising the celebrations, said he was delighted with this response.

'We are very pleased because a commitment like this from the town council will hopefully encourage other funding,' he said.

Next year's milestone event will include a music festival, artistic displays, a photographic competition and medieval dancing.

The market charter celebrations will focus on the range of markets held in and around Tavistock over the last nine centuries, and the stannary celebrations will concentrate on the town and its tin mining history linking in other local stannary towns including Chagford.

A 'snappy, easily identifiable' logo is being sought for the event and a competition is due to be launched in conjunction with Tavistock Library and local schools.
