THERE was a real buzz around Callington as Honey Fair got into full swing yesterday (Wednesday) with plenty of the old favourites and new attractions to keep everyone happy.

This was the 32nd honey fair since the tradition was revived and central to the day were the honey products and honey competitions in the town hall, including this year the honey cake competition, which was open to everyone.

There were street entertainers including a clown, the South East Cornwall Accordion Band, 12 town criers battling it out to take the town crier crown, the funfair and a multitude of stalls selling everything from jewellery to plants and linen.

Chairman of the honey fair, David Jones from Callington Lions, said as the Times went to press: 'The sun is shining today and we have not had that for the last two years, so that bodes well for a good day.

'We always get a good crowd out because it's a day when everyone gets together.

'There are plenty of attractions but always central to the theme are the bees and the honey in the town hall.'

New for this year was an exhibition of war time memorabilia put together by Callington British Legion member John Phillips, with donations to the Poppy Appeal.

Fellow member Phil Harriman said: 'John has spent a great deal of time on this.

'He started it when he was in the Midlands but we are fortunate enough to have him as a member of our club here now and we can take full advantage of this exhibition.'

Many of the shops were decorated for a shop window competition based on the movies and the Prim Raf Theatre members took visitors behind the scenes of its new production 'Allo Allo'.

Town councillor and Kivells estate agent Denise Winfindale said there was a good atmosphere in Callington on honey fair day: 'People look forward to this day, especially the kids, and decorating the windows makes the town look really attractive.

'The only thing I would like to see is more traditional Cornish market stalls in the future.'
