TAVISTOCK?S Christmas lights went up this week ahead of tomorrow?s official switching-on ceremony.

They had been due to go up earlier this month, but the job was put on hold while a suitable elevation platform was found to get the lights to the required height.

The ?cherry-picker? donated by the town council proved unsuitable for the task, and an alternative machine was not available until Monday of this week.

The streets will be filled with festive cheer when the colourful display comes to life at 7pm tomorrow (Friday).

Mayor of Tavistock Norma Woodcock will attend the ceremony, which will be followed by a dedication service for the tree of lights.

Dave McDowall, of Tavistock Chamber of Commerce, said subscriptions from businesses had got off to a good start, but more money was still needed to cover the cost of the lights.

?We?re about £1,500 short of our target of just over £5,000, so I would appeal to any businesses who haven?t already done so to support us,? he said.
