TOURIST information services in Tavistock were back up and running last week, as the town's Tourist Information Centre was officially opened in its new base at Spar. Spar shop owner Ravi Jhangiani has been working with Tavistock BID and West Devon Borough Council, to save the facility for the town after the borough council axed funding to the service as part of its money saving cuts. After announcing the cut to funding, the borough council appealed to businesses, community groups and residents to help to provide a future for the TIC, and Mr Jhangiani agreed to house the service in the Spar shop at Abbey Place. Working with BID and the borough council to make the move from its former position in Court Gate to its new location as smooth as possible, Mr Jhangiani officially opened the new tourist information area, along with BID chairman Tony Whitehead, Tavistock Chamber of Commerce chairman and BID member Nigel Eadie, West Devon Borough Council economy manager Nadine Trout, and BID manager Lisa Piper. Mr Jhangiani said: ' I am delighted to give something back to the community in this way. I want to thank the BID for all the hard work they have put in.' Lisa Piper said: 'We are absolutely thrilled that Ravi has taken on the TIC. It is a real asset to the town and we thank him very much for housing it. 'We also have to thank Nadine Trout for ensuring the handover has been smooth.' Tony also thanked Mr Jhangiani and said: 'The TIC is a wonderful facility for Tavistock and now it will be open for longer than it was previously and will be much easier for visitors to find.' The Tourist Information Centre is now housed on the left hand side of the store and will be open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 10pm on Sundays.
