NEARING the end of a great rugby season for Tavistock U12s team, and following on from a successful tour to Looe, where the team were victorious against U12 teams from Chippenham, Oxford, Lankelly and St Austell, there was high hope for success at the Devon U12 Rugby Festival held at Kingsbridge on Sunday.

Tavistock, fielding a squad of 13 players, opened well against Newton Abbot. Bert scored the first try leaving Tavistock ahead as they went into the second half. Charlie scored quickly after resume of play, following an excellent take from Harvey. Harvey converted both tries and executed a great tackle. Newton Abbot responded strongly and scored two tries in quick succession but only converted one.

Despite good Tavistock defence, Newton Abbot scored again – beating Tavistock by a narrow margin. Their coach complimented Tavistock on their strong team.

Brixham U12s 7

TAVISTOCK played a strong attacking game. The first half saw tries for Tavistock from Charlie and Finn – all successfully converted by Harvey - before Brixham pulled back with a try. Tavistock had a great tackle from Alex, with good driving and support from Christian, Finn, Bert and Morgan. Charlie and Harvey scored again.

The second half saw a storming run from Joe following excellent driving by Angus and pass from Charlie, who went on to score twice more. Tom put away the final try of the match. All conversions by Harvey left a decisive score line and raised spirits for the final match of the day.

Okehampton U12s 14

THE last match was very hard fought against the strong Okes' team. The Tavistock boys gave it their all – with fine tackling from Nick and Angus, with steady sustained drives from the forwards (Joe, Callum, Angus, Morgan, Josh, Tom and Alex).

Despite defending well Okehampton pressed forward and scored – leaving Tavistock seven points down at half time.

The second half opened with strong support for both sides from the parents and coaches. A chip from Bert allowed the Charlie/Harvey duo to score again, to level.

There was all still to play for but despite valiant efforts from both sides, Okehampton were rewarded with a try and conversion after sustained attacks on the robust Tavistock defence. Congratulations to all the Tavistock squad for displaying some great rugby skills and strong team spirit.
