LAST Friday saw the final of the Sir Francis Drake Winter Foursomes in strong wind at Tavistock Golf Club, between Alan (+1) and John Gawman (10) and Andy (3) and John Coe (16).
The first hole was halved, each scoring a bogey five but the second gave the players a taste of what was to come as they climbed the course. A seven on this par 4 was enough for the Gawmans to win the hole.
It was the start of a run of four holes, which they won, and the last was with an eagle as Alan chipped in from off the green.
The sixth was halved in seven, but then the Gawmans won the next three holes, including an eight at the eighth, to reach the turn in 46. They halved the tenth at which time they called it a day.
R A Potts won the midweek medal by two shots from the field. The leading players were as follows: R A Potts (11) 71 nett; D J Burge (10) 73; A J Gawman (+1) 74; G Ruth (+1) 74; M Apps (10) 74; P J Hunter (8) 75.
Adam Waddle emerged as the Junior Winter Matchplay champion with a final win over Sam Webster 3 and 1.
