JUBILEE 2000 activists from all over the county will gather in Brentor this Saturday, as they draw attention to to the campaign to cancel third world debt.

Those taking part in the event will climb the tor to St MIchael's Church, carrying mobile phones and lap top computers to send their messages out to world leaders and Jubilee 2000 networks around the world.

Sue Errington, one of the organisers, said: 'We plan to take 21st century technology to the 12th century church and send e-mails, faxes and mobile phone messages.'

She said the church was an appropriate place to remind everyone that although some debt had been cancelled, much more needs to be done.

'Only one third of the debt which Jubilee 2000 assesses needs to be cancelled is currently targeted, and no child, woman or man has yet benefited from the debt cancellation announced at the Cologne summit in June 1999.

'So much still needs to be done and we thought messages from the top of the world would be a striking way to do it!'

She said the Devon Jubilee 2000 community linking initiative will also be launched on Saturday, which invites schools, woman's groups, choirs and scout groups which may have links with countries in debt to learn more about the issue.

'And we need musicians who can make music to speed our messages on their way,' she added.

The campaigners will be taking Tavistock's Millennium book with them and anyone wishing to write their messages should do so before tomorrow (Friday).

The event starts in the Methodist Church Hall, Brentor, for lunch at noon, and continues at the top of the tor at 2pm until 4pm.
