RESULTS for Tavistock Tennis Club in the league last week were somewhat topsy-turvy with some wide margins for both wins and defeats.

It is notable that the club suffered heavy defeats against the Devonshire teams who are relatively new to the league and have some strong players.

Seniors: Men's A team won 8-0 away against Ivybridge B. Tavistock team: Linden Hardisty/ Sean Jefferson and Simon Thomas/Bernard Mowle.

B team lost 5-6 at home against Whiteford Rd B. Phil Harbottle/Peter Rogers v their 1st pair; 1-2 sets: 2nd pair; 2-1. Terry Lanchbery/Alan Bruce v their 1st pair; 0-2: v 2nd pair; 2-1.

C team lost 3-5 away against Mannamead D. Damian Heard/Jonathan Stephens v their 1st pair; 2-0, v 2nd pair, 1-1 (unfinished). Mike Jefferies/Steve Fletcher v their 1st pair; 0-2: v 2nd pair 0-2.

D team won 6-2 at home against Torpoint B. David Isaac/Bill Sparks v their 1st pair; 2-0: v 2nd pair; 2-0. Ashley Rice/Malcolm Tripp v their 1st pair; 0-2; v 2nd pair; 2-0.

E team lost 0 - 8 away against Devonshire C. Tavistock team: Josh Brown/John Donellan and Simon Ashfold/Mike Webb.

Ladies' A team lost 0-8 at home against Devonshire A. Tavistock team: Tric Locker/Tori Cunningham and Melody Mason/Claudine Sparks.

B team lost 0-8 away against Devonshire B. Tavistock team: Sue Whitman/Anne Bruce and Di Kersey/Tric Mowle.

C team won 6-5 at home against Liskeard. Babette Jackson/Nikki Hoar v their 1st pair; 1-2: v 2nd pair; 2-1. Gaynor Pollard/Josie Gerhold v their 1st pair; 1-2: v 2nd pair; 2-0.

Juniors: A team lost 34-43 at home against Plymstock. Ashley Rice v their 1st player; 2-6, 3-6. Steve Richardson/George Batt v their 1st pair; 5-7, 0-6. Steve v their 2nd player; 6-4, 6-4. Ashley/George v their 2nd pair; 6-1, 6-4.

Friendly match. Drew 4-4 away against Crediton. Barbara/Rod Watson v their 1st pair; 1-6, 2-6: v 2nd pair 6-2, 4-6. Annie/Mike Jefferies v their 1st pair; 6-3, 6-3: v 2nd pair leading 4-1 but abandoned due injury to one of their ladies. MDs one set 2-6. No LDs.

There has been a good entry for the club tournaments with new members participating. Finals day is planned for Saturday, July 17.

l Club junior Josh Brown, 13, has been awarded a junior merit award for the month of May in the P&D League, resulting from his win in a match for Tavistock against St Budeaux — he came from 1-5 in the first set to beat their No 1 player, two years his senior, in two sets.

The league chairman said: 'Josh showed great skill, concentration and self-belief to win the match.'
