Plymouth Uni A 3

Tavistock 7

TAVISTOCK men's hockey team extended their winning run on Saturday to consolidate their second place position in South West Division I — their fifth consecutive victory keeps them just three points behind leaders Truro and effectively ended any hopes the Uni students had of a promotion place.

First half goals from Carl Jeffery and Jason Lovell were cancelled out by two quick scores on the break by the students.

A splendid hat-trick from penalty corners by the injured Phil Edwards gave Tavistock a comfortable lead after the restart.

Two further goals from Jeffery saw another hat-trick and confirmed Tavistock as the highest scoring team in any South West League.

A consolation score by the students in the final five minutes resulted from slack marking, but was deserved by the Uni side who battled well despite playing with only ten men.

With only four matches left, Tavistock must work on their network and defensive play if they are to realise their ambition of ending the season as league champions.

Team: Neil Bradley, Kevin Lethbridge, Roger Costello, Bob Cowen, Phil Honey, Joe Hess, Nick Aveyard (captain), Carl Jeffery, Ricky Bellard, Jason Lovett, Phil Edwards. Sub Nick Andrews.

This Saturday Tavistock v Marjons A, 2.30pm, Bickleigh.

Tavistock Seconds 2

PGSOBS C 0

THIRD placed Tavistock Seconds hockey team had to secure the win against difficult opponents to maintain their challenge for one of the two promotion places.

Glanville had an abundance of players to choose from enabling the tactic of 'rolling substitutions' which worked so well against Penzance to be repeated.

In the first half Tavistock played disciplined hockey which did not allow PGOBs into the game. The passing was accurate and players were making space for each other.

Tavistock scored after 20 minutes from a well struck Townsend shot which the PGSOB's keeper had little chance of saving. The second goal was a fine example of individual skill from Rowe who received the ball outside the D area, dribbled it through the opposition defence and scored.

Tavistock had chances to make the game safe but shots from Greenway, Mackintosh and Moyse were all near misses.

The second half was closer with PGOBs passing the ball quicker to their forwards but the defence managed by keeper Osborne dealt with the pressure well.
