A WEST Devon pub has been named as the 'Best Wine Pub in Great Britain'.
The Harris Arms at Portgate won the title in the BT Sport Great British Pub Awards 2013.
The pub, run by licensees Andrew and Rowena Whiteman, had already won the South West regional title and competed against five other regional winners for the overall title.
The awards, organised by leading pub industry magazine, the Publican's Morning Advertiser, are recognised as the Oscars of the pub world.
The couple received their award from Inbetweeners actor and comedian Greg Davies at the awards ceremony at London's Park Lane Hilton Hotel last Thursday.
The judges praised the way in which Andrew and Rowena have run the unspoilt country freehouse and their extraordinary knowledge and passion for wine.
The judges were impressed with their unbeatable wine knowledge acquired in France and New Zealand, and their attention to detail, which has created a truly superb, unique — and unpretentious — customer wine experience.
They noted that the wine list is extensive and ever-changing, with around 20 always available by glass.
The Publican's Morning Advertiser editor, Rob Willock said: 'Andrew and Rowena and their team at the Harris Arms thoroughly deserve the title of Best Wine Pub 2013.'
Andrew added: 'We are delighted to have won the title — it is great recognition for the pub and the staff who work here and I am sure that our customers will be thrilled too.'
