A TAVISTOCK student was presented with the top award at Duchy College's annual prize-giving ceremony last Thursday. More than 1,200 people gathered to celebrate the achievement and success of the college students at the event. Presenting the certificates, prizes and special awards was guest of honour John Varley, director of Clinton Devon Estates and opening the ceremony was Sharon Dudden, chair of Duchy College council of governors. Following this, Andrew Counsell, principal of Duchy College, gave a report on the activities of the college over the last 12 months.  Mr Varley then handed out certificates to all of the students who had successfully completed their courses as well as presenting prizes and special awards to students who have shown exceptional talent and determination throughout their course. Alice Govier, 19, from Tavistock, who is also the students' union chairperson for Duchy College, won the top student award for the extended diploma in countryside and wildlife management as well as the award for best overall fulltime student in the countryside and gamekeeping department. She said: 'I was shocked and didn't think I had won, it was a nice feeling. I have loved my course over the last two years and the people and tutors have been the best part, being able to talk to them and learn from their experiences has been great. I've had a hard year personally, but despite this to have won two awards feels pretty good.' Just before the closing of the ceremony Alice addressed the crowd, congratulated the students for all their hard work, and sent thanks to all those who attended the day, and to those who have supported the students throughout the year. Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College said: 'Prize day is a fantastic celebration of the students' hard work, and a way for parents, carers and friends to join in the success of the students. We wish them every success in their future careers and are delighted to have helped them on their way.'
