A BEAUTY apprentice from Tavistock has been awarded third place in a prestigious regional competition. Tamsin Bryant, 23, a City College Plymouth student and Stars Hair and Day Spa apprentice, competed in the regional heats of the WorldSkills competition for Advanced Beauty Therapy. Tamsin, an advanced beauty therapy apprentice working in the college's commercial hair and day spa, Stars, was encouraged to enter the regional heats by her course tutor, Katie Bostock. 'Clients and staff have been really impressed with Tamsin right from the word go,' said Katie. 'When I mentioned competing for WorldSkills Tamsin wasn't sure — but all her clients and the beauty therapy staff here at the college knew that she would do herself, and City College, proud!' For the advanced beauty therapy heat Tamsin and her fellow competitors were asked to carry out three different treatments: a body faradic — an electrical treatment to tone and tighten muscles; a facial galvanic — an electrical facial used for deep cleansing; and a back massage. They were scored for each treatment as well as their overall appearance, preparations and client care. When announcing the final results the head judge for the WorldSkills Beauty Therapy competitions said that there was very little between first and third place, and that she would not be at all surprised to see all three winners make it through to the top ten. The top ten competitors nationally will be invited to compete in the national WorldSkillsUK competition at the Skills Show in Birmingham this coming November. Tamsin (pictured above) said: 'This is the first skills competition I have ever entered and I didn't really know what to expect, so I think I was much more nervous than I should have been. I am really grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this type of competition, and really hope that I am asked back for the finals. I was given some really helpful feedback and I know that I can do even better next time round!' The regional heats were held at Eastleigh College, near Southampton, on Tuesday, June 24. The finalists with the ten highest scores will be invited to compete at the Skills Show, which is being held at the NEC in Birmingham from November 13 to 15. The winners of the national finals will then compete at the 43rd WorldSkills competition in Brazil in August 2015.
