SOME of the top artists in the world of folk are to be guests at this year?s Dartmoor Folk Festival, due to take place in South Zeal in August. Already confirmed for the three-day event, which is held on August 5, 6 and 7, are The Posh Band, Roy Bailey, Hanging Johnny, Jackie Oates, Dangerous Curves, The Sultans of Squeeze and many more, such as Ben Campbell, Rob Pudner, String Whistle and Ticklish Allsorts. In addition there will be more than 15 Morris and dance teams, including many from the West Devon area. But the festival is not just about music. There will be the popular Dartmoor Broom Dance Championships, the Dartmoor Step Dance Championships, a Dartmoor fayre, craft displays, a music hall, ceilidh, workshops, a folk service, pub sessions and children?s entertainment. Other attractions include a craft tent and various sideshows. Alan Quick, festival spokesman, said: ?Most events take place in halls or at the village playing field, where large marquees are erected to transfer under cover if needed. Camping is available close to the festival site. ?The festival is run by a 40-strong association of supporters ? it was founded by local musician, the late Bob Cann, who had the idea he would like to start his own folk festival to help revive and preserve the traditions of Dartmoor, in particular the traditional music, dance, song and crafts of the area.? Bob Cann eventually received the British Empire Medal for his services to folk music.
