A BOOK published by the Tavistock and District Local History Society has won a top honour with the Devon History Society.

Lest We Forget: the Tavistock Fallen of the Second World War, written by founder members of the Tavistock society, Alex Mettler and Gerry Woodcock, has won the DHS's Devon Local Society Book Award.

The authors record the lives of 40 local people who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War, bringing together a wide range of photographs and other previously unpublished information.

The book follows a companion volume published a few years ago on Tavistock's losses in the first world war.

Cllr Roy Connelly, county councillor for Tavistock, said: 'I am delighted that the Tavistock and District Local History Society has been recognised through this book award.

'The book has made a major contribution to our understanding of an aspect of the town's history which is now beginning to fade from people's memories.

'I hope that local people will read this book and see for themselves what we all owe to those from Tavistock who gave their lives in wartime.'

• Gerry Woodcock will be signing copies of his book, Tavistock — A History, in Bookstop in Tavistock tomorrow (Friday) between 11am and 1pm.
