THE South West of England Winter Foursomes competition lived up to its name, competitors having to play in the first bad storm of the winter.
The early starters had the best of the conditions, with defending champions Ashley and Martin Moon beating the Yelverton pair, Kevin Norris and Tim Shobrook 4&3.
The Yelverton treasurer, Tony Rushbrooke was unable to continue his giant-killing act, and lost to D Jeffs and A Drake from Churston at the 17th, having been 3 down with 3 to play.
Ian Parker, ex-professional at Yelverton, returned to his old course, but failed to use his home course knowledge to the full and lost to Ross Whitelock and J Easton-Jones from Staddon Heights.
The father and son team of Ian and Mark Northey from Yelverton won the family competition, beating the father and daughter team of A and L Smallridge from Stover 3&2.
Local professional Tim McSherry and his partner, Devon Amateur champion, Scott Davey had to give 20 shots to 2 young ladies from Tavistock, K Gawman and N Coomstock - but managed to overcome this considerable handicap to win 3&1.
The weather was obviously too much for some as two pairs failed to turn up, and two matches were conceded on the front nine.
The afternoon saw the full force of the gale-force winds and torrential rain but all matches were completed, with the winners having two weeks to recover prior to the third round on Sunday November 12.
