TAVISTOCK?s town crier and macebearers will have no reason to feel ashamed of shabby headgear in future, following a generous donation by the town?s farmers? market association. The sorry state of the ageing tricorn hats has sparked anger in the past ? and some wearers said they would refuse to appear in public wearing such tatty gear. But last Saturday, Gill Gorbutt, chairman of Tavistock Farmers? Market, presented the new tricorns to the macebearers. Gill said: ?We don't have very much spare money but we had a little bit which we felt wouldn?t go amiss in this direction. ?It?s a goodwill gesture really from the farmers? market to the council ? a thank you for their support in terms of the market over the years.?
