MOTORISTS from Tavistock are being invited to a vehicle maintenance centre in the town, to take advantage of a free tyre safety check this October.
Tavistock Tyres, which is located on Plymouth Road Industrial Estate in Tavistock, is supporting TyreSafe and its Tyre Safety Month, and is offering a free tyre safety until Saturday, October 31.
Tim Schmidt, manager at Tavistock Tyres, said: 'TyreSafe is an organisation set up to raise the awareness of the importance of the dangers of defective and worn tyres.
'We have supported Tyre Safe and its Tyre Safety Month for many years now. It highlights the dangers of driving on tyres that have insufficient tread depth, making them both illegal and dangerous.'
The current law states that tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. Drivers with tyres that fail to meet these standards face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per illegal tyre.
