Carlsberg South Western League

Falmouth Town 0

Callington Town 2

TWO goals in the final eight minutes of this tough encounter at Bickland Park saw an improving but understrength Callington come away with three vital points which lifted them above their hosts.

A sparse crowd braved the elements as both sides struggled with the slippery pitch in the early stages. For the home side James Miller and Steve Proctor were both denied by man of the match Andy Brenton in the Callington goal, while at the other end Chris Tilbury saw his strike clear the bar after a great move on the right.

The second half was a more entertaining affair, certainly for the small band of visiting fans, as Callington stepped up a gear, sensing a possible first ever victory at Bickland.

They laid siege to the visiting goal but had to wait until the stroke of 90 minutes before celebrating a goal of some quality from Tilbury. The young midfielder won the ball on the halfway line before racing clear and, with defenders closing in and the keeper advancing, he slid it to the right of the Falmouth No 1.

With four minutes of injury time gone and with the home side pressing for an equaliser, Matt Shorter broke free on the right and controlled well on the edge of the area before cutting in and firing past Duncan Ayres for Callington?s second to secure the points.

ANOTHER below-par performance from Callington saw them slip to their 14th defeat of the season against fellow strugglers which leaves Town second from bottom and only three points above rivals St Cleer who have played six fewer games.

The situation looked rosier for the home side early on as Christ Truscott gave Town the lead but Paul Banks cancelled it out with a strike just before the break.

Richard Avery gave the visitors the lead after the break and Gary Jeffrey added a third before a late strike from Adam Reid reduced the arrears.

But it was too little too late for the side as they reach the halfway stage of the season with just 13 points from their opening 19 games.

l Callington Town second team face Probus in a vital basement battle in the league on Saturday. With the first team on a rest weekend, some fringe players may be given the chance to get a game under their belts.
