MORE than 45 budding David Beckhams enjoyed summer camp events recently, when Langsford Park in Tavistock hosted two half-day programmes of soccer-related activities for children under the age of eight.
West Devon Borough Council's football development officer, Neil Jordain, and Tavistock's mini soccer centre head coach, Mark Wickett, organised the events with the help of volunteer coaches, Scott Dent, Nick Cunningham and Tom Read.
Neil said he is very proud that Tavistock Community Football Club had been able to offer many youngsters their first experience of the sport.
He said: 'A number of the children already attend the town's mini soccer centre on a regular basis, but the camps also saw a good many who have never kicked a ball before.
'We were impressed by the enthusiasm shown by all those who took part – and who knows, we may have been coaching the next England centre forward!'
The camps were supported by local businesses, R F Allen Building Contractors, and Mike Williamson Manor Garage, who both donated footballs for the mini soccer centre.
The under eights mini soccer centre takes place every Tuesday from 5pm – 6pm on Tavistock College's all weather pitch.
The next football camps will run during the October half term, with 8–12 year olds on October 25 and 26 between 10am and 3pm; and the under eights on October 27 between 10am and 1pm.
