ALMOST £1,600 was raised for good causes during the Horrabridge Cavaliers' annual bottle auction.

Residents piled in to the London Inn to snap up the bargains, and enjoy an evening of entertainment.

Members of the Cavaliers had been collecting bottles door-to-door in the village over the past two weeks, and the two auctioneers, John Howells and Barrie Hyne, kept the pace of selling in order to cope with almost 300 lots on offer.

Cavaliers' vice chairman John Hudswell, who organised this year's event, said: 'The residents of Horrabridge once again showed exceptional generosity in making donations for the auction, and it was great to see so many of them coming to the London Inn for the auction itself.'

The bottle auction is one of the Cavaliers' main fund-raising events.

This was the tenth auction, and total proceeds have now exceeded £10,000.

The Cavaliers support good causes in the village and the surrounding area. The group supports individuals and organisations, and it also offers manpower to carry out work that would otherwise be too difficult or expensive to implement.

During the bottle auction, presentations were made to the Horrabridge Youth Club, and to Stephanie Hutchins.

The youth club received a donation of £400 from the Cavaliers to buy tables for use in its monthly markets.

Stephanie Hutchins has been selected for the West Devon District Cricket Squad and the Devon County Squad winter training sessions, and the donation of £250 from the Cavaliers will enable her to enjoy high quality coaching.
