Cockington 1st XI v

Whitchurch 1st XI

WHITCHURCH travelled to Kingskerswill to play Cockington in hot, increasingly threatening weather.

Whitchurch batted first on a lively wicket with uneven bounce. With the ball also moving prodigiously in the air, Credicott and Hall found runs hard to come by. Indeed, the Cockington opening bowler conceded only three runs in his first 11 overs.

After 23 overs Whitchurch had a mere 31 runs on the board.

As the ball lost its shine the Whitchurch batsmen started to take full toll.

Credicott moved onto 42 and Hall was dismissed for 21. Clapham scored a fluent 55 and Chappell a whirlwind 42, including three sixes.

Newton (14no) and Barriball (14no) maintained the momentum with boundaries and well judged singles.

In the last 23 overs Whitchurch plundered 183 runs to reach a total of 214 for 4 in their allotted overs.

Cockington chased the target with purpose from the first over and had 60 runs on the board in no time. They were aided by some uncharacteristically wayward Whitchurch bowling ? 23 wides in total! ? and by some half-chances not quite going to hand.

A thunderstorm after 11 overs had taken the spite out of the wicket and Scott (91no) guided Cockington home with ten balls to spare.

Whitchurch 2nd XI v Galmpton 2nd XI

WHITCHURCH 2nd XI came out with a winning draw in a closely fought, high scoring game against Galmpton 2nd XI in the Devon League on Saturday.

Having been asked to bat first by the visitors, the Whitchurch batsmen initially made slow progress. Witcher, Stokes and Gray were all dismissed cheaply and after 23 overs the score had only progressed to 65 for 3.

The second half of the innings was a different story. Mark Warwick hit out strongly, scoring 73 with good support from Andy Mitchell (33), Stuart Davies (20) and Joel Heatley (35 no), taking Whitchurch to a respectable score of 227 for 8 from 46 overs. Waters was the pick of the Galmpton bowlers taking 4 for 48.

The Galmpton openers Butt and Waters started strongly taking the visitors to 50 in the first 8 overs. Waters was then bowled by Jez Stokes, who also accounted for two more of the Galmpton top order batsmen.

Joel Heatley bowled a good spell, taking two more wickets and victory for Whitchurch seemed to be a possibility. But the other opener, Butt, continued to score freely supported by Broom and suddenly victory for Galmpton appeared likely before both were bowled by Neil Tamblin.

Another wicket for Tamblin effectively ended the Galmpton challenge and the innings closed 14 runs short at 214 for 8. Stokes finished with figues of 3 for 48, Heatley 2 for 28 and Tamblin 3 for 21.

Whitchurch took 15 points, Galmpton 11 points.
