THREE Okehampton College teachers will test themselves to the limit for charity in September when they compete in a 30-mile race across Dartmoor, carrying 32lbs of weight.

Rob Kelly, Neil Clayton and Jezz Pomfret will compete in the Chara Challenge. Set up two years ago after the return of 3 Commando Brigade from Afghanistan, the challenge aims to raise money for charities with a track record of helping those who are wounded or the families of those who have lost their lives in the service of their country.

This year's charities are the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen's Association.

The teachers intend to hold their own against other competitors, both civilian and military.

Mr Pomfret said: 'They're great causes, and we hope to finish in eight hours, just like marines need to to earn their green commando beret.

'We think they do a fantastic job. Their courage and selflessness is inspirational. Although incomparable, hopefully our efforts will encourage people to donate.'

Mr Kelly said: 'I'm doing the challenge for a few different reasons. I have enormous respect for people who can push themselves to the limit, whether that is physically, mentally or both.

'I know this challenge will test me, and be a real challenge to both body and mind.

'Whilst an endurance event like this is something I might take on on a very occasional basis, men and women who serve in the forces are constantly being asked to challenge themselves, enduring physical, mental and emotional hardship, and often at risk to their own safety.

'As some small token of appreciation of what they do on a daily basis, I want to push myself to the limit and raise money whilst doing so to support those who have served their country.'
