PUPILS at Horrabridge Primary School have designed a 2012 calendar based on local rivers around the village as part of a project this term.

The children have been learning the art of business with the help of the Real Ideas Organisation, a Plymouth-based company that works with schools to plan real life learning opportunities.

Their theme this term has been 'rivers' and the pupils' work has involved visiting the three rivers around Horrabridge — the Meavy, the Walkham and the Plym — and photographing different aspects of them.

They have been responsible for deciding which photos to use in their calendar, the design and have even written poetry to include on their pages.

With the help of local visitors, the children have learned about how rivers support the community and the effect they can have on the people who use them.

The final stage of the calendar-making process is now in full swing — marketing and selling the finished product.

The pupils will be manning stalls at local markets and have written to local firms to create sales.

All profits will go to the school fund to ensure the children reap the rewards of their hard work.

The first evening of sales took place on Tuesday November 8 at the school's annual ladies' night. In the space of three hours, 80 calendars were sold, raising £392.

Anyone who would like to see the calendar with a view to buying one, or perhaps even sell some for the children through their own line of work, can contact Mrs King or Mrs Downing at the school on 01822 852605.

Calendars retail at £6.50 each, £12 for two or £17.50 for three.
