TAVISTOCK Mencap says it will be unable to survive beyond another year if new committee members do not come forward.

A major threat hangs over the local society, which has been supporting people with learning difficulties for close to two decades, because appeals for a chairman have fallen on deaf ears.

A lot of the members are now elderly or have commitments elsewhere and new blood is desperately needed to continue the vital work of the charity.

Tavistock Mencap provides a drop-in centre at the Alexander Centre for 20-30 people, funds a singing and drama group, supports the Gateway Club and gives presents to people living in homes at Christmas.

Committee member Josceline Watson said Mencap was responsible for setting up services like the Molly Owen Day Centre which were now independent and therefore the demand for its support was not like it used to be.

?There is a lot more assistance for children with learning disabilities now because they can get access to special needs schools more easily ? the demand for our services has reduced a lot but we still provide a drop-in centre with a paid member of staff which is very well used.?

Mencap?s major fundraising event, the popular raft race between Morwellham Quay and Calstock, had to be cancelled in July because of a lack of manpower and insurance difficulties.

The society is looking for an enthusiastic new chairman who can provide the time and energy needed to take the society forward.

?There is a lot more that could be done but we need new blood to make that happen,? said Josceline.

?We can probably muddle through for another year but that will be it unless we can get some new recruits.?
