THE year 1975 was famous for many reasons, The West Indies overcame Australia by 17 runs to win the Cricket world cup, famous sportsmen born in this year included current England football captain David Beckham, and colossus New Zealander Jonah Lomu. Also born was West Devon Borough Council Cricket Club. Originally a team formed from staff and members of the borough council, the team now celebrates its 30th season and has much to look forward to thanks to the hardworking members of the committee. In 1993 the club changed its name to West Devon Cricket Club after much of the council was privatised and so links with the council were severed. The decision was also made to operate as a nomadic club after having home venues at Plasterdown and Tavistock Rugby Club in previous years. In 2004 the club was voted onto the Tamar Evening league. This presented an opportunity for West Devon players to play ?competitive? cricket for the first time in 30 years. Earlier this year the committee celebrated the anniversary by agreeing a three-year deal that will see them use the excellent facilities available at North Brentor. Throughout the last 30 years the club has seen almost 150 players enjoy the camaraderie and banter associated with this club. Former players include Jeff Ligo (former chief executive for the council) and Andy Coad (landlord of the Ordulph Arms). Remembered with fond memories are Mike Stephens (former council treasurer and active member of the Tavistock Lions) and Robin Fenner (local businessman and chairman of Tavistock Football Club). The club is celebrating its 30th season with a Chairman?s XI v?s Captains XI on Sunday, June 26, 2005 with food being provided by the club. It is hoped that players both old and new will join together once again to share stories and celebrate our successes of the past 30 years. If you want to contribute to the season?s celebrations or would like to have your say in the future of the club, the annual meeting will be held today (Thursday, February 24).
