PEOPLE in West Devon are being asked to 'use NHS services wisely', as hospitals and ambulance services across the county continued to be under extreme pressure.
There are a range of medical services available, whether that is from a pharmacy, GP or a minor injuries unit.
A spokesperson for Northern, Eastern and Western Devon CCG, said it was important that people consider their options.
The spokesperson said: 'There are a range of NHS services available for people to choose from when they become ill or have an accident.
'We want people to think twice before they visit emergency departments or dial 999 as these are for life threatening and emergency conditions only.
'There are plenty of healthcare options – other than emergency services - and we are asking people to use these if they don't feel it is an emergency.'
As the first few months of 2013 have been particularly cold, demand on the NHS is still high and people locally are asked to choose the most appropriate service for their needs:
l Self-care - for minor illnesses, combine medicines for coughs, colds or flu with plenty of rest and non-alcoholic fluids
l NHS Direct – can answer any health questions, 24 hours a day, and help to find services. Go to http://www.nhs.uk">www.nhs.uk or call 0845 46 47
l Pharmacist/chemist - for advice on illnesses and the right medicines
l GP/family - for medical advice, examinations and prescriptions for illnesses you can't shake off
l NHS walk-in centre/minor injuries unit - for treatment of minor illnesses or injuries, without an appointment. For details of your nearest MIU or walk-in centre go to http://www.nhs.uk">www.nhs.uk
l Devon Doctors — out-of-hours GP service for urgent issues needing a GP — 0845 6710 270 or 01392 824 600.
l Accident and emergency or 999 — only for critical or life-threatening situations.
