HOMEOWNERS in West Devon have benefited from nearly £100,000 in affordable loans as part of a scheme backed by the local council.

West Devon Borough Council has a partnership project with Wessex Home Improvement Loans (HIL) to provide subsidised finance to eligible homeowners to pay for essential repairs, adaptations or improvements to their properties.

And despite the recent heatwave, residents are being encouraged to think now about making repairs or improvements to keep them warm this winter.

Cllr Robert Oxborough, the borough council's community services chairman, said: 'It seems odd thinking about winter during the summer but it is actually a good time to make renovations.

'I know some homeowners simply do not have the savings to pay for such improvements so I would encourage residents to get in touch to find out more about the affordable loan scheme.'

The borough has been working with Wessex HIL, a not-for-private-profit organisation, since 2010.

Ellie Lister from Wessex HIL said: 'The majority of private homeowners just don't know help may be available from their local council.

'It's sad to think people are living in homes that are in need of repair because they are unable to access finance elsewhere or pay for the repairs themselves.'

A range of works are covered under the scheme and any works are assessed by a council officer before a referral is made.

A Wessex HIL adviser will then make a home visit to discuss the finance scheme.
