What a pleasant surprise to see a picture of Cllr Mathew opening an event, which with only half Bedford Square complete was reported as a 'huge success'. Once the scheme is complete I am sure such events will bring not only enjoyment to residents and visitors alike, but financial reward to the many deserving voluntary organisations in the town.

But more ironic is the fact that the people of Tavistock were persuaded not to return a Lib Dem group who wholeheartedly supported the seven organisations representing all facets of local life which formed the working group. These people gave considerable thought and their free time, for which they have my sincere thanks, to put together the scheme which is now unfolding.

Let's hope that Conservatives and their Con-dependent supporters who now control both borough and town councils see sense and ensure the management committee, which again consists of people from the town's many organisations willing to give up their free time, are fully supported. Especially during the initial period when there will no doubt be teething troubles.

Cllr Harry Pearson

Tavistock

I HAVE lived in this lovely town since 1936 and watched it grow to what it is today.

I was dead against 'enhancing' our beautiful Square, but conceded to some pavement widening, but when I this week saw the extent of it, I was horrified.

I presume the taxi rank will have to go; no spare for buses or coaches, which the town's traders so rely on during the summer season, and little space for two way traffic.

Well it's done now and only time will tell how much the 'enhancement' brings custom to the town centre, which is what is needed for the town to survive.

WITH reference to Mr Tomkins' letter (June 10) regarding parking in Tavistock, I totally agree with him, although I have no other solution to the problem.

I am now crippled by arthritis and can only walk a few yards, so I have had to abandon all shopping in the town, which I have enjoyed for years, two or three times per week.

So I have no alternative but to do all my shopping at Safeway.

May I add that I have applied twice for an orange badge, but have been rejected, being told that I do not qualify.

There must be many people in my situation, who can drive, but cannot walk the distances from the car parks, so the shops and cafés in the town are losing money that would contribute to the success of private businesses.
