THE Devon Guild of Craftsmen recently supported an exciting project to enhance the environment at Okehampton Primary School.

Local artist Sara Roberts worked with Year 6 children on making small clay structures for six weeks of the spring term which were used to create a 'Magic Garden' in the school's wooded grounds.

Some of the sculptures were made from the casts of the children's faces, and one or two of the braver teachers, while other small casts were made from a Virgin Mary's head.

The project also involved parent helpers, some Year 6 staff and some students from Okehampton College who were trained as 'experts' to assist the children. Along with the sculptures, a mystical 'seven-cycle labyrinth' was created.

The effect was very magical and such was the enthusiasm among the children that they hoped to become involved in a similar project again in the future.

The project culminated in an exhibition at the school which was attended by teachers and governors, representatives from the Devon Guild of Craftsmen who supported the project through the 'Little Hand, Big Hand Scheme' and staff from Okehampton College.

Deputy head Peter Southcott has expressed thanks to the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, the parents and student helpers and Sara Roberts for all their support and hard work that took place to ensure the project was so interesting and successful.
