OKEHAMPTON walkers have enjoyed the Walk and Talk Initiative launched six months ago so much the scheme is being expanded with a new moderate walk set up to meet the growing demand for longer walks.
The scheme is set to expand after Easter with the first weekly moderate walk being held next Wednesday (April 14). The first walk will meet at the Post Office in Okehampton at 10am and will follow a route along the Tarka Trail.
The moderate walks take between one and one and a half hours and can be over muddy and uneven terrain.
For those who prefer a more gentle stroll, the shorter 30 to 50 minute walks will continue to be held each Tuesday. All walks start at 10.30am, outside Waitrose and finish at a local cafe.
Richard Irvine, volunteer walk leader, said the walks had been a big success since they were launched last October.
The programme of longer walks for the month ahead is as follows: Wednesday, April 21, Meet at the Post Office for Parish Church/Two Lanes walk. To avoid walking up Lodge Hill, meet at 10.15am at the Parish Church; Wednesday, April 28, Meet at Okehampton Station for Granite Way walk; Wednesday, May 5, meet at the Post Office for Fatherford/Tramway walk.
An extra get-together is also planned on Sunday, May 9, for the Bluebell Walk at the Castle.
