SATURDAYS at Kelly College have a new look this term, as academic classes no longer take place for students.

The new Kelly Saturday has been developed by the staff at Kelly and led by Luke Francis, head of geography.

Compulsory academic lessons have been replaced by a three-pronged programme of activities — academic enrichment, culture and skills and outdoor classroom.

Students are encouraged to choose a different activity each half term with a great emphasis on 'trying something new'.

Options on offer this term include Chinese language and culture, cooking, photography, pistol shooting, fly fishing mountain biking and surf lifesaving.

Pupils will also have the opportunity to study the higher project qualification and the extended project qualification, pupil-led research projects that are fun to do and a fantastic addition to their CV when applying to university.

Mr Francis, Saturday school co-ordinator, said: 'Over two thirds of the school have embraced this new voluntary programme that, combined with our academic teaching in the week and other learning outside the classroom events, will ensure that Kelly pupils are prepared for their future careers and lives.'
