MAY I point out to MPs Cox and Stride and supporters of the re-opening of the rail line from Exeter through Okehampton and Tavistock that not everyone is in favour. Whilst it might make sense for Okehampton to have a better service to Exeter, re-instating the line further west is not a good idea on the grounds of cost, loss of the amenity of the Granite Way and destruction of buildings on the route both private and public. It is extremely unlikely that the parishes of Lydford, Bridestowe and Brentor will have stations and on top of that is the cost of rail travel. Tickets from Exeter to London, although variable, can cost £80 one way. Most tourists that visit the region come by car and that will not change for the foreseeable future. The 19th century was the age of the train, the 20th century the car and the 21st century should be the the age of the internet. Why not spend the money and energy on providing high speed broadband to all the parishes in West Devon now? There certainly needs to be a wider debate on this subject that includes all interested parties and not just the railway enthusiasts. Nicholas Skeaping Lydford
