MANY of South West's best downhill mountain bikers gathered to take part in last weekend's South West Downhill Regional Championships, held at the national standard tracks at Gawton Gravity Hub, near Gulworthy.
Entry was slightly down on last year, due in part to the event being held on the tough 'black' run, the 'Super Tavi', and to some of the top riders, such as Rich Thomas and Jay Williamson, being on world cup duties representing the UK at international level.
The weather was perfect for the event and despite some early mist on both practice and race mornings, the track remained largely dry.
Obstacles such as 20ft drops and sheer rock faces, combined with steep, fast sections and tight turns proved challenging for many riders, with a few early crashes in practice.
Top honours were taken by local favourite, Ash Mullane, with a time of 1:55.188, chased down by Gawton's sponsored junior rider, Charlie Ross, just one second behind him. A notable result and a rider to watch for the future was 13-year-old Maya Atkinson, who finished with a credible time of 2:59 — this time would have seen her placed second in the senior women's category behind winner Heather Kay.
The club has paid tribute to Chaz Lamley, the event organiser, Lazer Products who provided all the prizes, and all the other people who gave up their time to put on this great event.
Racing will continue after Christmas with the Woodland Riders' winter series.
Gawton Gravity Hub is a volunteer run community sports club.
