AN annual event in the Tavistock calendar for more than 150 years will not be running this year, it was announced this week. Tavistock and District Gardening Club has run its flower, vegetable and craft show in August for 155 years, but organisers have decided to suspend the event this year. Club chairman Geoffrey Willetts said there were two major reasons for not holding the show: ?Firstly, the committee which does all the organising is becoming more and more elderly ? times are changing, younger people seem unwilling to take part in the activities of the club. ?Secondly, the number of entries is falling year by year. ?We are very sorry about this but you have to face the facts ? it?s a different age now. ?It?s not a decision we have taken lightly and it has been done with the full consultation of the club.? Mr Willetts said he did not feel the problems faced by Tavistock Gardening Club were unique ? he had heard of other areas where annual flower shows were failing to take place. Mr Willetts said while the club felt unable to stage the show, members would be more than happy to help any other organisation which might like to take it on.
