I MUST protest over Phil Allen?s letter (March 2). Anyone who doubts global warming is for real is either brainless, or has a vested interest in not recognising this, and the serious implications of it. Global warming is a fact ? and it?s serious! Even within the past month, Sir David Attenborough, talking about his new TV series Planet Earth, has said there is no doubt about it ? it is a fact. And, the first few words he uttered in the programme on Sunday March 5 were ?One hundred years ago (and incidentally, through all time), there were only 1 1/2 billion people on earth. Within 100 years, we?ve increased that number to nearly 6 1/2 billion.? Five billion more, in just one century! This tiny planet cannot be enlarged to accommodate endless numbers of people and provide for all their needs and greeds. And what greed ? destroying the world! Anyone who thinks otherwise should remember that 10, 12, 15, ? 20 billion people people would mean complete destruction of the natural world, to house them, try to provide enough fuel, food and everything else they?ve always taken for granted, which will not be there then, as already, with our six and a half (almost) billion proving to be too much already ? the earth?s resources are exhausted. And with hugely populated developing countries like India and China using mind-boggling amounts of fuel, how the hell is there ever going to be any hope of having desired combatting effects on global warming? No matter what some countries (such as Sweden) try to do about lessening emissions, and even if we in the west only used half as much fuel (and everything else) how will it help, when there are incessant volumes of people increasing all over the globe, meaning more homes, factories, transport, etc etc, and therefore there will never be less used of anything, only more! Only a few weeks ago, we were told via TV news that if no real attempts are made by the end of the decade, worldwide, we will not be able to reverse the awesome effects of global warming ? this is our last chance, they said. The most crucial factor is time ? it has almost run out, for survival. The end of mankind is not difficult to imagine if we continue in this suicidal course, is it?
