LET the rot set in and be a greener gardener with home composting! That?s the message from West Devon Borough Council, as it stages a series of composting roadshows in the district over the next few weeks. More than a third of what we throw away is biodegradable ? tea bags, eggshells, grass cuttings, dead flowers, fruit and vegetable peel. If you include paper and card that?s up to 60% of your total refuse waste. All you need to transform them into an excellent soil improver is a compost bin. Home composting saves money on buying compost, is a free source of nutrients to help your garden grow, and by recycling waste avoids tipping good organic material into landfill sites. In late March and April, a composting bus will be roving around West Devon and experts will be on hand to give you all the advice you need to start you off with plenty of top tips to keep you on track. Cut-price compost bins and the digesters will also be on sale and the first ten people who buy one will receive a book called ?Composting for all? by Nicky Scott or a bag of West Country Compost. The first roadshow is on Saturday March 26 at the farmers? market in Bedford Square, Tavistock, supported by Tavistock and District Conservation Project. The Okehampton roadshow is on Saturday April 23 in Waitrose car park, supported by Original Organics. The roadshow rolls into Hatherleigh car park on April 26 supported by North Tawton Environmental Trust.
