SOME familiar traders will be missing from Tavistock's Brook Street by the end of the month.

The three 'girls' who have run Farley Menswear will be retiring on August 31 after 23 years of trading.

Partners Anne Haythornthwaite, Valerie Denton and Sue Reeder are handing over to Judith Murray who will continue to run the traditional menswear business along the same lines.

'We have enjoyed the years and have made lots of friends,' said Anne. 'We will certainly miss Tavistock especially the Dickensian Evening when we all dressed up.

'Our customers came from all over Devon and Cornwall. At Christmas they would bring us flowers and chocolates — which was lovely.'

Paul Anderson, who ran Andersons Jewellers for 15 years, also retired last week.

He and his wife, Mara, moved down from the Surrey area where they had three jewellery and small gift shops.

'I have had a marvellous time in Tavistock and if I had been younger I would have put the money back into the business and gone on for another 15 years,' he said. 'I would like to thank all my ex-customers who supported me over the years.

'I think Tavistock has a great future. With Vaughans converting the old Unigate dairy, Browns sorting out the West Street buildings and good people in the Bedford Hotel, the town can't fail.'

Dartmoor Photographic is moving from its premises in Duke Street into the former jewellers and is due to open on September 18.
