THE DANGERS of leaving children alone in cars concerned a Peter Tavy mother so much she launched a campaign to make parents more aware, writes Alison Stephenson. Lorraine Sharp, who has two young children, has created a website and is providing nurseries and schools with posters to bring the issue home. Mrs Sharp said she was shocked by the number of times she saw children left alone in or around cars when parents were either dropping off other children at school or popping into the shops. In America it is illegal to leave a child under the age of six alone in a car without supervision from a person over 12 years of age. This law is called 'Kaitlyn's Law' after six-month-old Kaitlyn Russell who died from overheating after being left in a parked car by a babysitter. There is no such law in the UK. 'It is something that has concerned me a lot and I can't just sit by and do nothing, but it is difficult to approach people at the time,' said Mrs Sharp. 'If I can save one child from becoming distressed or coming to harm then it will be worth it.' Mrs Sharp said with central locking on cars these days parents believed they were leaving their children in a safe place: 'They think they are only going to be two minutes and they take a chance — they think nothing will happen but how would they feel if it did.' She said some of the risks were that the temperature in your vehicle could change, your vehicle could be broken into or stolen or involved in an accident; your child could be abducted, die from carbon monoxide poisoning, set the vehicle in motion, become distressed and choke, be burned by the cigarette lighter or have their limbs crushed in electric windows, the sunroof or the boot. 'Your vehicle is not a safe place to play and that is the message that I am trying to get over,' she added. 'I am not telling anyone off and it is often responsible and loving parents who do this but that is because they do not have the information or realise the dangers.' Mrs Sharp has posters available to schools, children's groups and pre-schools. Her website address is: http://www.nochildalonecar.homestead.co">www.nochildalonecar.homestead.co m
