A COLLECTION of paintings capturing the variety and beauty of Dartmoor's bridges has gone on display at the High Moorland visitor centre, Princetown.

The paintings are predominantly in acrylics, the 24 pictures in the collection having been completed over the last two years by artist Jim McMullin.

The exhibition includes works depicting bridges at Horrabridge, Cadover, Postbridge, Bellever and Hill Bridge in Peter Tavy and Abbey Bridge in Tavistock.

Mr McMullin began to explore Dartmoor more fully when he took up letterboxing. Soon he developed a keen interest in the many crossing places on Dartmoor's streams and rivers.

He said: 'I've painted all my life, but this is the most ambitious project I have ever taken on.

'I have become so interested in bridges, now when I go over a bridge I have to stop and take a good look,' he said.

Mr McMullin said the bridge at Horrabridge, which dates from the 15th Century, was the oldest bridge he had painted, and one of his favourites.

Mr McMullin has included notes about each of the bridges he painted and a grid reference to encourage people to get out on the moor and see the bridges for themselves.

The Dartmoor Gallery is open seven days a week from 10am-4pm. The exhibition runs until April 24.
