A mammoth clearing up operation was carried out by West Devon Borough Council’s contractor, FCC Environment, along with council staff last Thursday, after another successful Tavistock Goose Fair.

As thousands of fairgoers left the town and stallholders packed up, the borough council contract workers moved in for a big clean-up operation. More than 9.98 tonnes of rubbish was cleared within an incredibly short space of time.

Starting in the very early hours of the morning at 2am, clean up teams worked against the clock to make sure that the streets were spotless.

In just four hours, all the streets, residential gardens, parks and the centre of town had been cleared of waste. More than 1.4 tonnes of this waste has been recycled.

This commendable effort left the streets in good order for residents and businesses starting their day after the town’s busiest day of the year.

Cllr Robert Sampson, West Devon Borough Council’s lead member for commercial services said: ’It is a real pleasure to thank publicly the men and women who do such an important job without much recognition. It is not an easy task to come out in the early hours of the morning and do this massive clear up, in such a little time, and yet year after year we see this amazing clean up.

’We are also very pleased that fairgoers and stallholders played a part by disposing their waste in designated areas.’
