YEAR on year Tavistock Royal British Legion has increased its contribution to the Poppy Appeal, and 2008 was no exception.

I am delighted to report through your columns that this year, thanks to the goodwill and generosity of the good people of Tavistock and surrounding areas, in 2008 our Poppy Appeal raised a magnificent £11,500.

It may well be that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have raised people's awareness of the almost daily reports of fatalities and injuries sustained by our troops in both theatres of war, and the significant role of the RBL in supporting the bereaved and injured through the money raised by the poppy appeal.

For whatever reason the RBL is most grateful to the street collectors, local businesses for the part they play in displaying poppies and collection boxes, to the Lloyds TSB staff for their patience and co-operation every time a deposit was made, but most of all to the general public in supporting financially the poppy appeal and wearing their poppy with pride. To each and every one involved a very sincere 'Thank you'.
