A TEXAN evening held in the borough recently was a ten-gallon success for a West Devon-based charity. Devon Aid ? Korogwe (DAK), is a small charity based in Bratton Clovelly, that puts clean water into villages of the Korogwe District in Tanzania. The Texan evening had been arranged by George Axford on behalf of DAK. As part of the evening, a draw took place to find a winner for a hand-made wall hanging, depicting scenes of Africa. The hanging was donated by Anne Reading of Halwill and had been raffled throughout the summer. The lucky winner was Rebecca Johnson from Cardiff. DAK reports that so far, with the support of many local people and organisations, they have installed pipelines in four villages, thirty one wells in twenty one villages and a rain water harvesting scheme at the local dispensary. The charity says the amount of water used in the UK for one flush of a toilet is the equivalent to the bucket full that a typical Tanzanian woman will carry on her head every time she fetches water for her whole family?s needs. Many children die each year in Tanzania through lack of clean water. Vivien England, of DAK, said: ?The help given by George Axford and his family for such a super evening is much appreciated.?
