DJM U11 Mayflower Tavistock Thistles U11s 3 Woodford Colts U11s 2 COLTS started the better of the two sides, forcing Thistles back into their own half and Craig Erickson in goal had to be alert in dealing with some dangerous moments. Isaac Evans and Michael Johnson, playing in unfamiliar positions at the back for Thistles, worked hard to keep the defence tight and Kieran Wash and Calum McCormick in midfield slowly managed to gain some of the possession. Thistles took the lead midway through the first half from a counter attack following a clearance out of defence. Although Keiran Wash seemed to be outnumbered, his strength and persistence paid off as he managed to break through the middle of the Colts? defence and finished neatly. The goal inspired Thistles, who started to play with greater confidence, and only good goalkeeping kept them at bay until half-time. The second half started at a good pace and the match switched from end to end although Thistles appeared to be carrying the greater goal threat. They doubled their advantage when Stephen Price broke down the left and pressurised the Colts? defence. His first effort was blocked but his persistence paid off when he chased a back-pass down as the keeper attempted to clear, blocked the clearance and the ball rebounded into the Colts? goal. Thistles looked confident with a two-goal lead and extended it to three when Adam Higson won a good tackle in his own half and a great ball from Evans put Matthew Jackman clear to finish calmly into the bottom corner. With five minutes left Colts pulled a controversial goal back when the Thistles defence moved up and claimed offside. The decision unsettled Thistles and Colts followed quickly with a second goal. With Colts pushing for an equaliser and Thistles looking for a calming fourth goal the game was from end to end. But Thistles managed to regain their composure and kept their lead until the final whistle. Man of the match: Isaac Evans (Thistles).
