THE second stage of the Tavistock Open Junior Tennis Tournament, hosted by the club in Plymouth Road, took place over the weekend October 8 and 9 when all the semi finals and finals matches were completed. This was a very successful tournament where the overall standard of play was good with some outstanding matches. Results: Boys singles. 18U main event; winner Josh Brown, Tavistock, v Nathan Marriott, Torquay, 7-5, 6-2. Consolation event; winner Phil Webb, Tavistock, v Michael Hayiami, Plymouth, 7-5, 7-6(8/6). 16U main; winner Matthew West, Teignmouth, v Josh Brown 7-5, 7-5. Consolation; winner Lewis Belcher, Dousland, w/o Phil Webb injured. 14U main; winner Ryan Colmer, Ivybridge, v Ben West, Ivybridge, 7-6(7/3), 6-3. Consolation; winner Fabian Trotman Drake, Yealmpton v Alex Crisp, Winkleigh, 6-1, 6-4. 12U main; winner Matthew Whittam, Ivybridge, v William Hunt, Ilfracombe 6-3, 6-3. Consolation; winner William Donaldson, Cornwood, v Matthew Hooper, Plymouth 4-6, 6-2, (10-3). Boys doubles, no 18U and 14U events. 16U winners Fabian Trotman Drake/Matthew West v Ryan Colmer, Ivybridge, Ben West 7-5, 6-3. 12U winners Matthew Whitttam/Louis Kirkup, Blacktawton, v William Hunt/Robbie Kerr, Ottery St Mary 6-1, 6-1. Girls singles. 16U played on a round robin basis due small entry and no Consolation. Winner Lucy Bell, Exeter. 14U winner Rachel Williams, Newton Abbott v Sarah Lucas (Tavistock) 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Consolation; winner Katherine Bell, Exeter v Rachel Sodden, Plymouth 6-2, 6-2. 12U winner Rachel Williams v Mia Loye, Torquay, 6-0, 6-0. Consolation; winner Charlotte Sandy, Cornwall, v Liz Brown, Whitchurch, 6-1, 7-6(7/3). Girls doubles. 16U winners Lucy Bell/Katherine Bell v Catherine Lloyd, Plymouth/Rachel Seddon, Plymouth, 6-1, 6-0. 12U winners Jenny Anderson, Plymouth/Chanelle Belcher, Dousland v Robyn Osborne, Okehampton,/Elizabeth Brown 6-4, 1-6, (10-6). By general consensus the match of the tournament was the Boys 12U singles semi final where William Hunt beat Stuart Parminter, Crediton, 4-6, 7-6(7/5), (15-13), in a high quality match played in good spirit lasting over two hours. Trophies were presented by club president, Norma Woodcock who expressed her thanks to Mary Bayliss, referee, Plymouth LTA for arranging such a complex tournament so admirably, to Kylie Martin for her dedicated work with the organisation and to the many others who had helped to make it such a successful event. Thanks were also expressed to the Devonshire Club who made indoor courts available on the Saturday during periods of inclement weather which was much appreciated.
