ORGANISERS of the Ten Tors challenge are reminding the public about traffic arrangements at Okehampton Battle Camp for the weekend.

Sgt Mark Hoar, from Okehampton Police Station, said: 'We are appealing to people to stay away from the town centre between 5am and 7am on the morning of Saturday, May 9.

'It will be very busy at that time because we have to get the families of 2,400 participants, plus the invited guests and a large number of spectators, into Okehampton Camp ready for the 7am start.

'Our experience is that the traffic builds up in the town, because access to the camp is so restricted.

Sgt Hore said to help assist in getting the vehicles safely up the hill, a one-way system for upwards only traffic will be used from 5am to 7am.

'This is to ensure public safety and to get visitors into the car park as soon as possible.

'It should not affect many local people at that time of the day.

The Loop Road will be closed to vehicles from 6.30am until 8am, while the main expedition and the Jubilee Challenge, for less able youngsters start.

Sgt Hore added: 'If you are driving onto the moor later on Saturday, please look out for the less able walkers and wheelchair users, some of whom are limited to using the Loop Road.'

One side of Station Road will be coned off from Friday, May 8 until late Saturday morning, and residents are asked to remove their vehicles in good time and to remain patient when the traffic is moving slowly.
