THE clock on the parish church in Tavistock should soon be showing the correct time for the first time in many months. The clock has been consistently fast for a long time ? vicar of Tavistock, Preb John Rawlings, said it did confuse him at times, when he thought he was running late for a service then discovered there were still seven minutes to go. Although the clock is in the church tower, it is the town council?s responsibilty to maintain it. Mr Rawlings said the bellringers had put it right on occasions, ?but no-one seems able to stop it going fast?. He said the clock used to be much better when it was wound by hand and someone was paid to go up the tower twice a week. The town council then paid for it to be electrically wound. Town clerk Roger Howard said the clock was maintained approximately once a quarter and he was unaware that it was not telling the correct time. ?Someone has to tell us,? he said, adding that he would arrange for it to be corrected.
