SPLENDID displays greeted visitors to the 58th Bere Ferrers Spring Flower Show last Saturday. It was thought the freezing temperatures of the last few weeks, unparalleled in the last three decades, would have spelled disaster for the show, but everyone worked diligently to overcome the difficulties. There were increased entries in the trumpet and large cupped daffodil sections, but because of the season running four to five weeks late, the mid and late season?s flowers were decreased. Entries jostled for attention in the shrubs and camellia sections, while special classes in the decorative, domestic and children?s sections to celebrate the approaching 80th birthday of the Queen, were well supported. All the children?s 80th birthday cards in class C2 will be sent to the Queen as a tribute. Chairman Margaret Willmott said it had been the wettest and coldest show ever, but 80 people had exhibited, 34 of them were children and entries were up 140 on last year. She also thanked her committee for all their hard work. Prior to presenting the trophies, Henry Hooper, president, congratulated the children on their entries, particularly on the cards. Thanks were expressed to the judges P Argles and John Lanyon section 1 daffodils; G Bennett section 2 and 3, other flowers and vegetable produce; Mrs I Merritt, decorative and children?s; Mrs M Lethbridge, domestic, and G Brown, section 6, wine.
