IN reply to Mr Woodcock's inquiry (Letters, February 26), Bedford Bridge over the River Walkham, between Grenofen and Horrabridge, is known locally as 'Magpie Bridge' because of the Magpie Tearooms which used to be on that corner.  

Similarly, we still hear the crossroads and bus stop in Dousland, at Ironmine Lane, referred to as 'Pigeon Post', after the café which was once nearby.

Old habits dying hard?  Or local colour preserved?
